One word, one symbol

Bilibang is a visual compression system : it replaces each word with a unique symbol. It is neither a language nor a secret code — nothing in it is pronounced, and nothing in it is guessed. It is a shorter way of writing the same text, and it reads back exactly.

Twenty-nine characters become seven. And decompression gives back the original sentence, character for character, accents and punctuation included.

It can be checked, and it has been checked

The rule is simple to state and costly to keep: every dictionary entry carries a symbol that belongs to it alone.

Digits too

Each digit from 0 to 9 has its own symbol, and no Arabic numeral survives the conversion. Dates, times, decimals, percentages, negative numbers and grouped thousands are converted and come back exact.

Seventeen languages, no settings

French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Czech, Ukrainian, Greek, Romanian, Hungarian.

The symbol itself says which language it comes from. There is no marker at the start of the text and no menu to set: a text that mixes two languages reads back word by word without a mistake.

Nothing leaves your machine

No connection, either during installation or during use. The text you compress does not leave your computer or your phone. The Android app asks for no permissions — no contacts, no storage, no network — and works in flight mode.

What you receive

1. The official Bilibang Dictionary, in two editions

Print edition — 123 pages. The 4,963 single-character symbols, which cover 93% of an ordinary French text, and the 724 illustrated concepts with their translations into seven languages. The reading guide, the alphabet tables, the number system.

Complete edition — 779 pages. The same, plus the 125,362 French forms, one by one. No ordinary binding could hold this volume.

2. The Windows software

A real installer, with its icon, its Start menu entry and its uninstaller registered in Windows settings. Compression, decompression, translation between the seventeen languages, searchable dictionary, history and favourites.

3. The Android app

The same engine and the same dictionary, on your phone. Android 7.0 and above, no permissions.

Une seule bibliothèque Bilibang sert les deux. A test suite checks at every build that the two implementations, Python and JavaScript, do not differ on any of the 246 test cases.

Said plainly

  • The Windows software is not signed with a commercial certificate: Windows will display “Unknown publisher” the first time it runs. The instructions supplied explain this.
  • The Android app does not come from the Play Store: it installs from the file, which requires allowing this source once.
  • A text made up mostly of numbers comes out longer than it went in: this is the accepted consequence of the rule “no digit remains in plain form”.
  • Compression is 27.7% in characters and 67.9% in bytes — a symbol weighs three bytes where a Latin letter weighs one. Both figures are given because both are true.

The French vocabulary comes from Lexique 3.83 (Boris New and Christophe Pallier, CC BY-SA 4.0); the sixteen other languages, from free Hunspell dictionaries. The details are supplied with the app and appear in the dictionary’s appendices.
