Understand. Choose. Lead. Not to endure tomorrow, but to build it.
The story
Iris Bonnard did what she was told to do. The master’s, the internships, the applications. She is thirty and she has nothing: the jobs where you learned slowly, by making mistakes and starting again, disappeared while she was preparing for them. Nobody pays anyone to walk any more.
Abel Roux has been surveying buildings for forty years. He puts his hand on a wall and he knows. He cannot say how he knows — and that is exactly what machines cannot learn. He agrees to train Iris. In the field, in the cold, by hand, while tools now take the same readings in a fraction of the time.
Between them: a city that is cracking, a teenager who has never done anything slowly, a woman who has already seen a profession disappear, and eleven millimetres that should not be there.
What this book explores
We have always sought to go further: boats, cars, trains, books, calculators, computers, search engines. Powerful tools that have carried us over immense distances. Today a technology is changing scale, and the question is no longer whether you are for or against it.
It is about knowing which distances are still worth travelling on foot — and who, from now on, maintains the road.
“The plane did not kill walking.
But nobody takes a plane to go to the supermarket.”
